NYC Anonymous: A Look Back at 2008

December 31, 2008

Anon Nation put together this terrific tribute to all the enturbulators in the Big Apple.

I wish I could have joined you for your epic year!

National Post on Anonymous

December 30, 2008

James Cowan has written an article for Canada’s National Post on the Orwellian Power of Anonymity.  I was pleased to be interviewed for the piece.  It is only partly about Anonymous and the Scientology organization but well worth reading.

Despite the lack of a leadership structure, membership list or other organizational accoutrements, Anonymous — which draws its name from the pseudonym used by most 4chan members — quickly established a Web site and plan of attack. On Jan. 21, a message was posted on several Web sites announcing Anonymous’ intentions. “Anonymous has decided that your organization should be destroyed,” a robotic voice intoned over images of clouds. “For the good of your followers, for the good of mankind and for our own enjoyment, we shall proceed to expel you from the Internet and systematically dismantle the Church of Scientology.”

“The initial impression is Anonymous must be a lot of kids,” said Mark Bunker, an Emmy-winning journalist and Scientology critic who has been adopted as a self-described “Obi-wan Kenobi” to Anonymous. “But I’ve met hundreds and hundreds of these people at protests and, yeah, there are a lot of students, but there are doctors and police officers and military and teachers and strippers — a wide range of people.”

The Anonymous campaign against Scientology amounted to guerrilla warfare, with protestors sniping at the Church while protected behind a wall of secrecy.

The article also talks about the artist Banksy.  I got to see a piece he painted on a London building when I was out for dinner with a group of Anonymous in July.

Not DM?!?!

I just got an email from someone who claims he attended the Scientology New Year’s Event and David Miscavige was missing in action.   Here’s the report:

I went to the New Year’s Event this past Saturday and I have a piece of info for you if you haven’t already heard – Tommy Davis was the MC for the whole event and COB was not there!!! This is extremely unusual as DM normally runs the whole thing every year. This is a first since he became COB and it was the most talked about thing after the event was over. There is a buzz going on amongst Scientologists trying to figure out why he wasn’t there to host the most important event of the year.

Most of the other usual speakers were there to brief about specific areas of the usual cult activities (WISE, ABLE, Narconon, etc.) but again, everyone was a little shocked not to see little Davey there at all. One of my other ex-scientologist friends said he might be doing a tag-along with Tom Cruise during his film promotion but this is not likley… my guess is he is either sick, incapacitated or handling a huge monstrous flap that only he can deal with. It would take something HUGE for him to miss an event like this!

The only other time this has happened was during one of the Maiden Voyage weeks on the Freewinds. After the 2nd day, he just left mid week and Ray Mithoff had to be the MC for the rest of the weeks events. We were told by ship staff that he had to go handle a flap, and it was really hush-hush… We later found out that right around the same time, the criminal charges from the murder of Lisa McPhearson came up.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know so you can pass it on if you wish. I’m not on any message boards or blogs, etc. so you were the first person I thought of to pass it along to. Thanks!

I haven’t seen any word about this elsewhere.  Palace coup?  Bad case of the BT’s?

London Enturbulation

December 28, 2008

Let me say first off, I don’t condone barging into a Dianetics center and annoying the staff.  They’re cogs in the machine and their lives are miserable enough as it is.  However  —  the song they get to hear in this video is pretty snappy.  It’s got a good beat and the lyrics are terrific.

I don’t know what the laws are like elsewhere, but trespassing like this in the U.S. could get you into some serious trouble.  My advice?  The public would enjoy hearing that song sung in front if the center.  The staff would still be enturbulated but only because you were educating the raw meat that would get diverted from entering.

My only other advice (and of course no one has to listen to me) is filming sideways or upside down doesn’t add a lot to a video.  A rakish angle can be nice.  Sideways, not so much.

And if you wanted to listen to me, Jeff Jacobsen and I are doing a year in review internet radio show for an hour this afternoon starting at 3pm California time.

Batten Down the Hatches!

San Diego Anon was at cause over the local Org.  The Scientologists were so afraid to be exposed to entheta that they put up a very primitive Romulan cloaking device.

Jeff Jacobsen’s Thesis on Anonymous

December 17, 2008

Jeff has written another of his fine scholarly articles about Scientology.  This one covers Project Chanology and the Anonymous movement.

In January 2008 some members of an Internet-based collective known as Anonymous began actions against the Church of Scientology that are continuing. They designated their collective action “Project Chanology.” The originations of Project Chanology, its structure, its decision-making process, and its methods of protesting are collectively unique. Project Chanology shows the new types of social networking and activism that can spring from the instant communication the Internet provides. Understanding Project Chanology will provide a template for understanding such future movements and their actions.

How To File An IRS 501(c)(3) Complaint

December 13, 2008

Anonymous has prepared a video to explain how to file a complaint.

The computer voice is a bit hard to follow so here’s te text of the video coutesy of Anonymous:

The organization known as Scientology has gone too far.

Section 501(c)(3) of US Code Title 26, which governs tax-exempt organizations, reads: (3) Corporations, and any community chest, fund, or foundation, organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, testing for public safety, literary, or educational purposes, or to foster national or international amateur sports competition (but only if no part of its activities involve the provision of athletic facilities or equipment), or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals, no part of the net earnings of which inures to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual, no substantial part of the activities of which is carrying on propaganda, or otherwise attempting, to influence legislation (except as otherwise provided in subsection (h)), and which does not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distributing of statements), any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office.

(The otherwise provided clause does not apply, as the Co$, being a church, is a disqualified entity as described in subsection (h).)

The Co$ through inciting its members to donate time and means to support hateful and malicious acts, and in-kind campaign contributions to groups that supports political candidates, has now made a substantial part of its activities attempting to influence legislation. Also, a large majority of its wealth is diverted into private bank accounts.

You can help! Send the IRS an official complaint about the CO$ activities, either by email, fax or US Mail.

1. Reach out to members of Scientology, and talk with them about the illegal actions of David Miscaviges Scientology. Ask them what they have witnessed.

2. Prepare one or more other articles of your choice (you can use links, or do your own research) showing the CO$ substantial activities attempting to influence legislation.

3. Prepare this IRS Form 13909.

4. Dont forget to date your referral at the top and include your submitter information. If you are a member of the Church, you may wish to check the box marked I am concerned that I might face retaliation or retribution if my identity is disclosed.

5. Send it to the IRS, either by: * Email: Prepare your documents as PDFs or web links, and send your complaint form with supporting documentation to eoclass@irs.gov. * Fax: fax your documents to (214) 413-5415 * Mail: mail your documents to IRS EO Classification Mail Code 4910DAL 1100 Commerce Street Dallas TX 75242-1198
