Top Honors

May 31, 2007

As an example of a Scientology footbullet, their attempt at discrediting the BBC’s reporter John Sweeney has backfired big time.  When they tried to derail the Panorama expose “Scientology and Me” by putting a clip of Sweeney shouting on YouTube, the BBC put their own clip up in defense.  That clip is now one of the most viewed and discussed clips on YouTube.

So, thank you David Miscavige.  You may be tiny in stature but you’ve brought huge disapproval to the cult you currently run.  Will you remain in charge until you drop your body, as Hubbard did?  Will you be overthrown by people who can make legitimate reform and stop the abuses in your group?  Or will you just oversee the continued downward spiral in Scientology’s own stats?

Time will tell.

Goodnight, Mr. Reilly

May 29, 2007

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Charles Nelson Reilly who I always found delightful in his every TV appearance.  I was well aware of his career as an actor and director of serious Broadway fare and loved that he was able to be treated seriously at the same time as being accepted as a funny, outrageous man on game shows, talk shows and kid’s fare.

Of course, as an X-Files fan and a critic of Scientology I was giddy over the fact that Charles got a great late-in-his-career revival as Jose Chung, a journalist on an episode of Millennium and then later on the X Files.  On Millennium, Chung was writing a story about the leader of a Hollywood cult which had amazing similarities to Scientology.

Darin Morgan wrote the episode, which integrated humor into a grim show brilliantly, and FOX and the production team had the guts to shoot the episode and air it when all others were cowed into silence.   Many thanks to them all.  And thank you, Charles, for the fun you brought to the planet.

The Scientology Wars

May 28, 2007

This speech was given at a CAN conference in 1992, before CAN was taken over by Scientology.  Jolly West talks about the battles Scientology has engaged in against anyone who speaks out about the group.

Louis Jolyon (“Jolly”) West was an American psychiatrist, human rights activist and expert on brainwashing, mind control, torture, substance abuse, post traumatic stress disorder and violence.

Former Scientologist Hannah Whitfield introduces Jolly West in Part 1.

A Classroom Full O’ Crazy

May 24, 2007

ORIGINAL BROADCAST DATE: Wednesday, May 23, 2007

We could start with the bat-shit insane Glenn Beck but at least his producer was smart enough to have Professor David Touretzky on as a guest to speak about the increased use of Hubbard’s Study Tech in public classrooms. Dr. Dave once again proves that there is no one better than he when it comes to clearly laying out the information the public needs to know.

I’m so glad Dave was able to speak about the safepointing of Scientology through front groups such as this. He hit the nail on the head.

It’s yet another terrific appearance from Dr. Dave.

Free Keith Henson

May 21, 2007

ORIGINAL BROADCAST DATE:  Saturday, May 19, 2007

The Many Moods of Vince DanielsVince Daniels has Keith Henson’s wife, Arel Lucas, on the show to update us on the latest legal situation Keith faces in Riverside County. Keith Henson was put on trial in Riverside for picketing Scientology. During the course of his trial, the word Scientology was never allowed to be uttered. Keith was found guilty of “interfering with a religion” while the jury never knew it was Scientology making the complaint.

Facing a year in jail, Keith fled to Canada. I know, dumb move. He sought asylum there but ultimately Canada turned him down. He snuck back into the U.S. and eventually was tracked down by Scientology who had the Arizona authorities arrest him.Keith Henson

Keith asked to serve his time in Arizona, outside the heavy influence of Scientology’s deep pockets. Their desert compound in Hemet, housing Scientology’s leaders, has a major impact on Riverside County. Governor Schwarzenegger was asked not to deport Keith for his misdemeanor sentencing but the governor refused and now Keith is being shipped back to the courthouse which has treated him unjustly since this ordeal began.

Arel gives an overview of the entire experience and asks for help from all of us.

Salvage a Planet

May 19, 2007

Scientology responded to the BBC Panorama show “Scientology and Me” by releasing a video attack on reporter John Sweeney. Now, another video responds to Scientology’s response.

This filmmaker looks at the event John Sweeney was not allowed to attend for the Panorama show. With running commentary, this video goes inside that event and shows DM’s words to the world, revealing what actions Scientology has taken and continues to take to salvage this prison planet.

Panorama: Scientology and Me

May 15, 2007

John Sweeney sets out to investigate Scientology and finds himself the target of PI’s, abuse and a massive smear campaign meant to ruin his career.

This is a terrific show which has been surrounded by much controversy stirred up by Scientology. At the end of the day, the cult has drawn far more attention to the show than it would have had without their hissy fit.

Other critics have put together websites documenting the Scientology actions against Sweeney and his program. Check out these sites:

Here’s the report Cooper did about the Panorama show with critic Bruce Hines and Mike Rinder for Scientology’s Office of Special Affairs.

Bring Back Donahue!

May 13, 2007

I grew up watching Donahue in my formative years. He created a format that was lively and he actually covered topics of importance. Before Oprah and the countless imitators who latched onto his roaming mic routine, he had used his show to explore subjects that rarely got covered on a daytime talk show.

It was a kick to see this episode from 1995. This is the Phil I loved. Blustery, provocative, entertaining and willing to challenge the audience and the guests.

Heber Jenztsch appeared on this live broadcast along with Pat Jones and the Baptist preacher behind the World Literacy Crusade. One of the stipulations to get Heber there was there could be no critics on stage to confront the Scientologists with facts. Phil had to take on the critic’s role and does a pretty good job.

At the start of the show, Phil tells Heber he can sum up what he knows about Scientology in 10 seconds…then goes on to show he was much better prepared than he wanted let known. Is it a perfect show? No, but it is a good show and a fun show in many ways.

Like John Sweeney from the BBC, Donahue has balls. We need more people like them on TV and I for one would like to see Phil back on the air.

Scientology…Losing it!

May 11, 2007

And by “it” I mean the war on the Internet. The BBC has what should be a spectacular show next week on Panorama and I can’t wait. It’s all about how Scientology attacks anyone who speaks out against them. The producers were wondering if they had changed over the years and found out first hand that Scientology hasn’t and can’t change.

Scientology apparantly had PI’s follow the filmmakers everywhere they went and spy on them in their hotels and restaurants and it’s all on camera. This will be a fun, fun show.

How do they combat the upcoming bad press? By leaking some of the video that they shot of the BBC crew and reporters. Last week, a journalist at the Telegraph was shown a clip that presented the reporter John Sweeney “in a bad light.

In the course of interviewing a Scientology spokesman, the BBC interviewer, John Sweeney, lost his temper. And I mean REALLY lost it, shouting at the top of his voice straight into the face of an interviewee standing only inches from him.

How do I know? I’ve seen the footage. You see, the Scientologists were – predictably – filming Panorama filming them. And yesterday they gleefully showed me the results.

And now that clip has seen the light of day, and it is brilliant. Sweeney is playing with the Scientologists and using their own drills to be “at cause” over them. His pause in the middle of the rant is a clear indication he is playing around.

Compare Sweeney’s “rant” to the demonstration of this training drill by Vaughn Young on a British TV show from 90’s called Network First. He is at cause over an ashtray.

If you’d like to see the TR used in action, there’s no better clip than the assault of Bob Minton. Boston Scientologist Frank Offman has his hands in his pockets, screaming at Bob Minton, trying to get a reaction from Bob.

Make sure to see this Panorama show when it airs on May 14th on BBC1. You can also see it online at their website after it airs. Here’s the brief promo from the end of last week’s Panorama to give you an idea of what’s to come.

From the Panorama site, John Sweeney says there are three rules in journalism. First, find a crocodile. Two, poke it in the eye with a stick. Three, stand back and report what happens next. What happens next week should be priceless.

John Sweeney has posted a response to Scientology’s YouTube assault on the BBC website. In it, he says he did indeed lose his cool. That doesn’t quite comport with his mellow comment in the middle of the shouting but I have no reason not to accept his account:

As often in life, I snapped over something completely different and quite trivial.

Top Scientologist Tommy “Don’t mention the word cult” Davis had been goading me all week, and on the seventh day I fell into his elephant trap. He shouted at me and I shouted back, louder.

If you are interested in becoming a TV journalist, it is a fine example of how not to do it. I look like an exploding tomato and shout like a jet engine and every time I see it makes me cringe.

I apologised almost immediately, Tommy carried on as if nothing had happened but meanwhile Scientology had rushed off copies of me losing it to my boss, my boss’s boss and my boss’s boss’s boss, the Director-General of the BBC.

I lost my voice, but not my mind.

The Times reports that Scientology has sent out 100,000 copies of a DVD  answer to the show in an effort to blunt the impact of Panorama’s report.

In a preemptive strike that is costing the church £30,000, it is sending copies of the DVD to all MPs and peers, religious leaders and other “influential” figures.

So determined has it been to neuter claims in the programme that it is a cult that its film makers tailed the journalists, employed CCTV and repeatedly confronted reporters.

John Sweeney has my respect and I know that this YouTube assault on him is only going to draw more attention to the show. Here’s another clip featuring Scientologist Tommy Davis running from Sweeney’s camera.  They won’t let me embed the clip, so double-click on the video and it will take you to YouTube’s version.

Can’t wait. And with 100,000 copies of the Scientology DVD floating around, it sure would be nice if one of them made it into my hands.

Flirting with Disaster

Stephanie MillerBROADCAST DATE: May 4, 2007

Stephanie Miller goofed on the rumors of Katie’s flirting with her co-star on the set on “Mad Money.”

Personally, I don’t put much stock in these rumors but it doesn’t stop me from being amused by the following antics:
